This tip calculator works out the tip and the total bill, and splits the bill between any number of people. Choose a tip percentage or enter your own, add the number of people, and you get the tip, the total and the amount each person pays. You can also round up so everyone pays an even amount.
Tip Calculator & Bill Splitter
How to Calculate a Tip
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage and divide by 100:
Tip = Bill × Tip % ÷ 100 and Total = Bill + Tip
Example: for an $84.50 bill and a 20% tip, the tip is 84.50 × 0.20 = $16.90, and the total is $101.40.
Quick mental math
- 10%: move the decimal point one place to the left. $84.50 → $8.45.
- 20%: double the 10% amount. $8.45 × 2 = $16.90.
- 15%: take 10% and add half of it. $8.45 + $4.23 = $12.68.
- 25%: divide the bill by 4. $84.50 ÷ 4 = $21.13.
How to Split a Bill With Tip
- Calculate the tip on the full bill.
- Add the tip to the bill to get the total.
- Divide the total by the number of people.
Example: 4 people share a $120 bill and leave an 18% tip. The tip is $21.60, the total is $141.60, and each person pays $35.40. With “round up” turned on, each person pays $36, and the tip becomes $24 (20%).
This splits the bill evenly. If people ordered very different amounts, it is fairer for each person to calculate the tip on their own share of the bill.
Should You Tip on the Amount Before or After Tax?
Etiquette guides generally say the tip should be based on the pre-tax amount, since tax is not part of the service. In practice, many people tip on the total for simplicity, and the difference is small. On a $100 meal with $8 tax and a 20% tip, it is $20 versus $21.60. Enter the tax amount in the calculator to tip on the pre-tax amount.
How Much to Tip in the US
| Service | Typical tip |
|---|---|
| Sit-down restaurant | 15–20%, 20% or more for excellent service |
| Bar | $1–2 per drink, or 15–20% of the tab |
| Food delivery | 15–20%, at least $3–5 |
| Takeout, coffee counter | Optional, often 10% or loose change |
| Taxi or rideshare | 15–20% |
| Hair stylist, barber | 15–20% |

Check the bill before tipping. Many restaurants add an automatic service charge for large groups, often 18–20%. If it is already included, an extra tip is not expected. Tipping customs also differ a lot between countries. In much of Europe service is included and people round up, and in Japan tipping is not customary.
