Discount Calculator

Discount calculator: sale price, savings, stacked discounts and percent off

This discount calculator shows the sale price and how much you save when an item is marked down by a percentage or a dollar amount. It also handles stacked discounts, such as “20% off plus an extra 10%”, and adds sales tax if you need the final checkout price. To find what percent off a sale price is, use the second calculator.

What Percent Off Is It?

How to Calculate a Discount

Savings = Original price × Discount % ÷ 100
Sale price = Original price − Savings

A quicker way is to multiply by the percentage you still pay. With 20% off you pay 80%, so the sale price is the original × 0.80.

Example: a $65 jacket at 30% off. Savings = 65 × 0.30 = $19.50. Sale price = 65 × 0.70 = $45.50.

Stacked Discounts: 20% + 10% Is Not 30%

When a store offers “an extra 10% off sale prices”, the second discount applies to the already reduced price, not the original. On a $100 item:

  • 20% off: $100 → $80
  • Extra 10% off: $80 → $72

The total discount is 28%, not 30%. The order of two percentage discounts does not change the result. With a dollar coupon, the order does matter: on a $100 item, a $10 coupon applied after 20% off gives $70, but applied before it gives $72. The calculator applies the discounts in the order you enter them.

How to Find the Percent Off

Percent off = (Original price − Sale price) ÷ Original price × 100

Example: a pair of shoes is reduced from $80 to $60. (80 − 60) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25% off.

Sales Tax and Discounts

In the US, sales tax is normally charged on the price after the discount. For an $80 sale price with 8% sales tax, the tax is $6.40 and the total is $86.40. Enter your local tax rate in the calculator to see the checkout total.

Watch for “up to 70% off” signs: the headline discount usually applies to only a few items. Comparing the final price, not the percentage, is the safest way to judge a deal.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate 20% off a price?

Multiply the price by 0.80. For example, 20% off $45 is 45 × 0.80 = $36, which saves you $9.

Is 20% off plus an extra 10% off the same as 30% off?

No. The extra 10% is taken from the already reduced price, so the total discount is 28%. On $100 you pay $72, not $70.

How do I work out what percent off something is?

Subtract the sale price from the original price, divide by the original price, and multiply by 100. From $80 to $60 is 25% off.

Is sales tax calculated before or after a discount?

Usually after. Store discounts reduce the price before tax is added. Manufacturer coupons can be treated differently in some US states.
