Date to age converter: convert a date of birth to exact age in years, months and days

This date to age converter turns a date of birth into an exact age in years, months and days. By default it calculates age as of today. You can also choose any other date to find how old someone was or will be on a specific date, such as an application deadline, a school cut-off date or a travel date.

How to Convert a Date of Birth to Age

Age is the time between the date of birth and today, or another chosen date, counted in completed years, then completed months, then the remaining days.

  1. Years: subtract the birth year from the current year. If the birthday has not happened yet this year, subtract 1.
  2. Months: count the full months since the last birthday.
  3. Days: count the days since the last full month.

Example: born March 10, 2000, age on October 10, 2026:

  • 2026 − 2000 = 26, and the birthday (March 10) has already passed, so 26 years.
  • From March 10 to October 10 is 7 months.
  • The day of the month is the same, so 0 days.

Result: 26 years, 7 months, 0 days, which is 9,710 days in total.

More Examples (as of October 10, 2026)

  • Born July 20, 1995: 31 years, 2 months, 20 days.
  • Born January 1, 2010: 16 years, 9 months, 9 days.
  • Born December 25, 1980: 45 years, 9 months, 15 days.

Age on a Specific Date

Many forms ask for your age on a particular date rather than today. Examples include the age on the first day of a school year, on a competition cut-off date, or on the date you travel. Change the “Age on this date” field to that date to get the exact age at that moment. It works for past and future dates.

When an age limit matters, for example “must be under 18 on September 1”, check the exact wording of the rule. Some rules count the age on the date itself, while others use the age at the start or end of a year.

Why Months and Days Can Look Different

Months have 28 to 31 days, so the “days” part is counted from the same day of the most recent month. When that day does not exist in a short month, the last day of the month is used. For example, someone born on January 31 completes a month on February 28 (or 29), so on March 1, 2026 they are 1 month and 1 day old. Different calculators handle these end-of-month dates in slightly different ways. The total days figure is always exact and is the best number to compare.
