Hours Calculator

Hours calculator: hours worked between two times, with breaks, weekly total and pay

This hours calculator works out the hours and minutes between a start time and an end time, minus any unpaid break. Add a row for each day to use it as a weekly timesheet: it totals your hours in both hours:minutes and decimal hours, and calculates your pay, including overtime, if you enter an hourly rate. Overnight shifts are handled automatically.

How to Calculate Hours Worked

  1. Convert both times to the 24-hour clock. 1:30 PM becomes 13:30, and 9:00 AM stays 9:00.
  2. Subtract the start time from the end time. If the minutes go negative, borrow 60 minutes from the hours.
  3. Subtract unpaid breaks.
  4. Add up the days for a weekly total.

Example: 8:45 AM to 5:15 PM with a 30-minute lunch. 17:15 − 8:45 = 8 hours 30 minutes. Minus the 30-minute break = 8 hours.

Overnight shift: 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM. Since the end time is the next day, add 24 hours to it: 30:30 − 22:00 = 8 hours 30 minutes. The calculator does this automatically whenever the end time is earlier than the start time.

Converting Minutes to Decimal Hours

Payroll systems and timesheets usually need hours as a decimal, not hours and minutes. Divide the minutes by 60: 7 hours 45 minutes = 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours.

50.08350.58
100.17400.67
150.25450.75
200.33500.83
250.42550.92
300.50601.00

A common mistake is writing 7 hours 30 minutes as 7.30. In decimal hours it is 7.5. At $20 an hour, that mistake costs $4 per day.

Calculating Pay and Overtime

Gross pay = decimal hours × hourly rate. In the US, the Fair Labor Standards Act requires overtime pay of at least 1.5 times the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek for most non-exempt employees. Some states, such as California, also require overtime after 8 hours in a single day, which this calculator does not apply.

Example: 45 hours at $20 an hour. Regular pay: 40 × $20 = $800. Overtime: 5 × $30 = $150. Gross pay: $950.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate hours between two times?

Subtract the start time from the end time using the 24-hour clock, then subtract any unpaid break. For 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, that is 17:30 − 9:00 = 8 hours 30 minutes.

Does the calculator work for overnight shifts?

Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the shift ends the next day.

How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours. 6 hours 20 minutes = 6 + 20 ÷ 60 = 6.33 hours.

How many hours is 9 to 5?

9:00 AM to 5:00 PM is 8 hours, or 7.5 hours with an unpaid 30-minute lunch break.
